Tryppin' on Tryptophan! Hey, all! Just a reminder that we DON'T have rehearsals this week! We'll all be too busy getting ready to over-stuff ourselves with turkey and dutch apple pie! Enjoy yourselves and be safe! We never know WHAT the weather will do! Have a great Thanksgiving and we will see everyone next week! Be sure to check out the Jazz band on December 4th at Jamesport Brewing Co.! Check Out Our Monthly Events Calendar and Stay in the Loop!

Hello, WSCC Students! Please forgive the impersonal nature of this blanket email, but it’s the easiest way to get word out to all of you! Ted Malt, Associate Professor of Music, and I want to personally invite you to be our guests at an extraordinary music event on Saturday, October 11—Michigan State University’s premier Jazz ensemble, THE BEBOP SPARTANS, will be in performance as part of the 2014-15 30th Anniversary Performing Arts Series, at 7:30 pm at the Ludington Area Center for the Arts (107 South Harrison St., Ludington). You have a FREE ticket to this event—all you have to do is go online and make your reservation! The next generation of great American jazz musicians is represented in this spectacular ensemble from MSU. Improvisation, bebop, swing, blues, and soul are just a few genres of this American art form that the Bebop Spartans will be performing for you. Michigan State University has become the national powerhouse of Jazz Education. Under the direction of Professor Rodney Whitaker, MSU has recruited some of the world’s finest young jazz musicians. The Bebop Spartans, MSU’s 19 piece jazz big band, is a culmination of Whitaker’s talent. Our concert features special guest artist, world-renowned bassist extraordinaire, Christian McBride. Mr. McBride has been one of the most important and most omnipresent figures in the jazz world for 20 years, sometimes hard to believe considering this man is not yet 40. Beginning in 1989, this Philadelphia-born bassist moved to New York City to further his classical studies at the Juilliard School, only to be snatched up by alto saxophonist, Bobby Watson. Since then, McBride's lists of accomplishments have been nothing short of staggering. McBride has worked with the best of the very best - Freddie Hubbard, Sonny Rollins, J.J. Johnson, Ray Brown, Milt Jackson, McCoy Tyner, Roy Haynes, Chick Corea, Herbie Hancock and Pat Metheny. In the R&B/Contemporary world, he's not only played with, but also arranged for, Isaac Hayes, Chaka Khan, Natalie Cole, Lalah Hathaway, Sting, Carly Simon, Don Henley, and Bruce Hornsby. Don’t miss this exceptional event—go online to www.westshore.edu, click on Performing Arts, click on Buy Tickets Now, click on Bebop Spartans—Get Tickets, insert the student code for your FREE ticket! It is case sensitive, so be sure and use capital “S” and capital “D” followed by the numbers, 1415. See you at the Ludington Area Center for the Arts on Saturday, October 11, at 7:30 pm for this amazing WSCC Performing Arts event! Cheers, Rick Plummer Rick J.
